          FAQ

          Commercial RO Systems

Commercial RO systems are used across hospitality, food and beverage, healthcare, laboratories, manufacturing, agriculture, data centres and other industrial applications where lower dissolved-solids water is required. The final configuration depends on feed-water quality, flow demand and the required treated-water quality.
The standard series is presented for approximately 1,500 to 12,000 GPD (about 5.7 to 45.4 m³/day). Actual capacity should be selected according to the required permeate flow, feed-water conditions and operating requirements.
Yes. RO systems can be configured around feed-water analysis, required permeate quality, flow rate, membrane type, operating pressure, recovery and pretreatment requirements. Components such as pumps, controls and pretreatment can therefore be selected for the application.
Pretreatment may include multimedia filtration, activated carbon filtration, softening and chemical conditioning such as antiscalant dosing. The required stages depend on the feed-water characteristics and are important for protecting membrane performance and reducing fouling or scaling risks.

Reverse Osmosis (RO) Systems · Understanding Reverse Osmosis

Reverse osmosis is a pressure-driven membrane process. Pressure greater than the feed-water osmotic pressure forces water through a semipermeable membrane while dissolved salts and other rejected contaminants are retained in the concentrate stream.
RO can reduce dissolved salts and a broad range of dissolved contaminants, including many ions and soluble compounds. Actual removal depends on membrane type, feed-water chemistry, temperature, pressure, recovery and overall system design.
Yes. RO is widely used to reduce total dissolved solids (TDS) because the membrane rejects many dissolved salts and ions. The achievable reduction depends on membrane selection, feed-water quality and operating conditions.
RO can substantially reduce chloride because chloride is a dissolved ion. The actual rejection depends on membrane characteristics, feed-water chemistry and operating conditions.
No. RO should not be described as providing absolute 100% removal under every operating condition. Salt rejection is typically very high, but it varies with membrane type, feed composition, temperature, pressure, recovery and system condition.
Yes, RO can significantly reduce many dissolved hardness-forming minerals such as calcium and magnesium. Where scaling risk is high, pretreatment such as water softening may still be used to protect the RO membranes.
RO membranes can provide substantial reduction of microorganisms when the membrane system is properly designed and maintained. Microbiological control should still consider pretreatment, membrane integrity and, where required, a dedicated disinfection step.
Pretreatment helps control suspended solids, turbidity, chlorine or oxidants, hardness, scaling potential and other feed-water conditions that can foul or damage RO membranes. Good pretreatment supports stable performance and longer membrane service life.
RO recovery is the percentage of feed water converted into permeate (product water). Recovery is determined by the membrane system and feed-water chemistry; increasing recovery can increase concentrate salinity and scaling risk, so it must be selected within the design limits of the system.

Industrial RO System Service & Maintenance in Sabah

Keep Your Reverse Osmosis System Performing at Its Best

Professional RO System Service in Sabah

A Reverse Osmosis (RO) system depends on more than the membrane alone. Pretreatment filters, pumps, instruments, chemical dosing, operating pressure, flow and membrane condition all influence the quality and reliability of the treated water.

Sabah Water Filter Industries (SWFI) provides professional industrial and commercial RO system service in Sabah. Our service focuses on maintaining stable performance, identifying potential problems early, reducing unplanned downtime and helping extend the service life of critical components.

          Why Regular RO Maintenance Matters

RO membranes continuously separate dissolved salts and other contaminants from feed water. Over time, suspended particles, mineral scale, organic matter and biological growth can affect performance. Poor pretreatment, changes in feed-water quality, excessive recovery and insufficient maintenance can all contribute to declining RO output.

Without proper servicing, an RO system may experience:

          • Reduced permeate flow — less treated water is produced than normal.
          • Declining water quality — product-water quality may deteriorate as system performance changes.
          • Increasing pressure or differential pressure — an important indicator of membrane or filtration problems.
          • Membrane fouling and scaling — deposits reduce efficiency and shorten membrane life.
          • Higher operating costs and unexpected downtime — problems not identified early can interrupt operations.

          Our Industrial RO Maintenance Services

          01. RO System Inspection & Performance Check

Our technicians inspect the overall condition and operating performance of your existing Reverse Osmosis system. Depending on its configuration, checks may include feed-water condition, operating pressure, permeate and concentrate flow, product-water quality, recovery, pumps, valves, piping, filters, membranes, dosing equipment, instrument readings, visible leaks and abnormal conditions.

          02. RO Membrane Performance Assessment

Your membrane is the heart of the RO system. We assess performance indicators associated with scaling, fouling, reduced permeate flow, increased differential pressure and declining product-water quality. A membrane should not automatically be replaced when performance drops; the cause should first be investigated to determine whether cleaning, pretreatment correction or replacement is appropriate.

          03. Industrial RO Membrane Cleaning & CIP Service in Sabah

When membrane performance declines because of accumulated deposits, professional Clean-In-Place (CIP) cleaning may help recover performance where membrane condition permits. SWFI can assess whether CIP or another corrective action is appropriate based on fouling, membrane condition, feed-water chemistry and system design.

          04. Pretreatment Inspection & Service

Good RO performance begins before the membrane. We can inspect multimedia filters, activated-carbon filters, water softeners, cartridge or bag filters, and chemical dosing systems to help protect downstream RO components against suspended solids, chlorine, hardness, scaling and other conditions that contribute to fouling.

          05. Filter & Consumable Replacement

Cartridge filters and other consumables require replacement according to operating conditions, feed-water quality and system usage. SWFI can supply and replace RO membranes, cartridge filters, filter bags, filter media, activated carbon, softener resin, O-rings, seals and other water-treatment consumables.

          06. Pump, Valve, Piping, Instrument & Sensor Checking

Our service team can inspect pump performance, leakage, abnormal vibration or noise, valve condition, piping connections, pressure abnormalities and visible deterioration. Pressure, flow, conductivity and other instruments are also checked so operating decisions are based on reliable readings.

          07. RO System Troubleshooting

Contact SWFI if your RO system has reduced product-water flow, increasing operating or differential pressure, rising TDS or conductivity, reduced recovery, frequent filter replacement, pump problems, unusual alarms, inconsistent water quality or membrane-performance decline. These symptoms do not all point to the same cause; we inspect the complete treatment train to identify where performance is being lost.

Preventive Maintenance for Industrial RO Systems

Do not wait for the RO system to stop. Preventive maintenance uses inspections, operating records, consumable replacement and performance trends to identify deterioration earlier. Our approach is simple: Inspect → Measure → Record → Compare → Diagnose → Service → Optimise.

There is no single service interval for every RO system. The right frequency depends on feed-water quality, system size, operating hours, application and performance trends.

          Industries We Support

SWFI provides RO service support for manufacturing facilities, hotels and resorts, food and beverage operations, hospitals and healthcare facilities, palm oil and industrial plants, boiler-feed-water systems, commercial buildings, laboratories and technical facilities.

          Why Choose SWFI?

SWFI looks at the complete RO treatment process—not simply routine filter replacement. We assess pretreatment, membrane condition, operating performance and supporting components to help determine why a system is underperforming and what corrective action is appropriate.

Already Have an RO System from Another Supplier?

We can still help. Your RO system does not need to have been supplied by SWFI for us to assess its condition. If you experience poor water quality, reduced production capacity, membrane problems or recurring maintenance issues, our technical team can recommend suitable servicing, replacement components or system improvements based on the actual system condition.

FAQ: Industrial RO System Service Sabah

How often should an industrial RO system be serviced?

There is no single maintenance interval suitable for every system. Service frequency depends on feed-water quality, operating hours, system size, application and performance trends.

How do I know if my RO membrane needs cleaning?

Common warning signs include reduced permeate flow, increasing differential pressure and deterioration in product-water quality. Performance trends should be reviewed before deciding on cleaning or replacement.

Does an RO membrane always need replacement when performance drops?

Not necessarily. Depending on membrane condition and the type of fouling, cleaning or correction of upstream treatment may be appropriate before replacement is considered.

Why is pretreatment important for an RO system?

Pretreatment reduces the contaminant load reaching the RO membrane and helps control conditions that contribute to fouling, scaling and performance loss.

Can SWFI service an RO system supplied by another company?

Yes. SWFI can inspect and service existing industrial and commercial RO systems, subject to system condition, accessibility and technical assessment.

Is Your RO System Losing Performance?

Do not wait until reduced flow, poor water quality or membrane fouling turns into an unexpected shutdown. SWFI provides industrial RO inspection, preventive maintenance, membrane assessment, troubleshooting and technical support across Sabah.

SWFI was engaged to replace the filter media in an existing stainless-steel sand filter serving an underground-water supply at Nexus Resort & Spa Karambunai. The work focused on restoring the filter bed with a new multilayer media arrangement selected for the site’s raw-water condition and treatment requirement.

          The Site Challenge

The existing system draws on underground water as an alternative source to help reduce reliance on supplied water. During the site review, yellowish-brown staining was visible around the existing filter and pipework. This condition can be associated with iron-bearing raw water, but a water test is required to confirm the actual water quality and the treatment priority.

Based on site information, the existing media had been in service for more than 20 years. Over time, filter media can lose effective depth and become less able to manage sediment loading, colour, turbidity and iron-related particles. The right service approach must consider the water source, usage pattern, filter configuration and actual incoming-water condition.

SWFI team inspecting the Nexus Resort filter site
SWFI team after completion of the media filter replacement work.

          SWFI’s Treatment Approach

Rather than recommending a standard filter without reviewing the site, SWFI assessed the existing system and prepared a media replacement approach for the vessel. The objective was to renew the filter bed with a multilayer media arrangement designed to support the removal of hard sediment, colour, turbidity and iron-related particulate matter from the underground-water supply.

          • Review the existing vessel, pipework and access condition.
          • Open the filter for service and assess the internal condition during access.
          • Replace the aged filter media with a new multilayer media arrangement.
          • Carry out backwash and operational checks as part of recommissioning.
          • Recommend ongoing monitoring based on actual water condition and site usage.

Important: Filter media is selected for a specific water condition and application. A water test is the proper basis for confirming iron, turbidity, colour, pH and other relevant water-quality parameters before finalising a treatment solution.

Internal distribution components viewed during servicing.

          Backwash & Service Verification

After a media change, backwash and commissioning checks are important to prepare the filter bed for operation. The required service frequency will vary according to water intake, operating hours, sediment loading, iron content and actual usage.

Backwash process during the service work.

          Final Result

Clear treated-water sample after filtration at Nexus Resort
Treated-water sample collected after the filtration service.

After the service work, the treated-water sample appeared visibly clear at the point of collection. This is an important visual observation for a general-use water system following media replacement and recommissioning.

However, visual clarity alone does not confirm all water-quality parameters. The suitability of treated water for a particular use should be verified by an appropriate on-site or laboratory water test, especially where iron, turbidity, microbiological quality or other parameters are relevant.

When Should Filter Media Be Replaced?

As a practical maintenance guideline, SWFI generally recommends reviewing filter media at least every three years. However, the right interval depends on the incoming-water condition, system duty, backwash practice and the quality required for the application. The Nexus system demonstrates why a routine review matters: the media had been in service for more than 20 years before replacement.

If your system treats underground water, river water or another raw-water source, periodic inspection and water testing can help identify whether the existing media and treatment process remain suitable.

          Need a Water Filtration Assessment?

SWFI can carry out an on-site water assessment and recommend a filtration approach based on your actual water condition—not simply a one-size-fits-all filter. Contact us to discuss underground water, river water or other filtration requirements.

Sabah Water Filter Industries (SWFI) carried out servicing and renewal work for an industrial reverse osmosis (RO) water treatment system supporting the production line at Nam Heng Safety Glass (Sabah) Sdn Bhd in KKIP, Kota Kinabalu. The work focused on restoring pretreatment performance and replacing key RO consumables after prolonged operation without routine servicing.

          The Production Water Challenge

Nam Heng Safety Glass (Sabah) Sdn Bhd uses RO-treated water as part of its production operation. During the service assessment, the existing RO system had been in operation for an extended period without maintenance. The reported conductivity reading of the RO water had exceeded the target limit specified for the production requirement, creating a risk to consistent production-water quality.

For an industrial RO system, conductivity is an important operating indicator. A change in conductivity can be associated with membrane condition, pretreatment performance, operating pressure, feed-water quality or other system conditions. The appropriate response is to inspect the complete treatment train rather than assume that a single component is the cause.

          SWFI’s Industrial RO Service Scope

SWFI reviewed the pretreatment and RO components that protect the membrane and support stable treated-water quality. The service scope was planned around the actual system condition and the production application.

          • Service and replacement of the sand-filter pretreatment stage.
          • Service and replacement of activated carbon for pretreatment protection.
          • Water softener servicing to support hardness management before the RO system.
          • Replacement of RO membranes as part of restoring the system’s treatment performance.
          • Inspection of valves, pipework, operating condition and the related filtration equipment.

Why the complete system matters: RO membranes rely on effective pretreatment. Sand filtration, activated carbon and water softening each help manage different feed-water conditions before water reaches the RO membrane.

Conductivity readings before and after service

Field conductivity readings recorded during the service work changed from 98 µS/cm before service (25.4°C) to 10 µS/cm after service (28.4°C). The photos show the meter displays at the time of each spot check.

          Before service · 98 µS/cm at 25.4°C
After-service RO water conductivity reading: 10 microsiemens per centimetre at 28.4 degrees Celsius
          After service · 10 µS/cm at 28.4°C

These are point readings from the service visit. Conductivity is one operating indicator; it does not by itself establish overall water safety or confirm every production specification.

On-site servicing at the industrial RO treatment system.
Removed and replacement RO membrane elements documented during Nam Heng service
Used elements alongside new replacement RO elements.

          Restoring the Pretreatment System

The pretreatment vessels were checked as part of the service work. These stages help reduce suspended solids, chlorine-related risk and hardness conditions that can affect downstream RO performance when left unmanaged. Servicing the pretreatment system together with the membrane replacement helps create a stronger foundation for consistent RO operation.

Why RO Water Quality Should Be Monitored

Industrial RO systems should be monitored through routine operating records, including conductivity, pressure, flow and pretreatment condition. A gradual change in these readings can help identify developing issues before they affect production. Regular servicing also helps determine when filters, media, softener resin, membranes or other consumables require attention.

For production-critical water, the right maintenance frequency depends on feed-water quality, system loading, operating hours, water demand and the quality standard required by the application. An inspection provides the proper basis for a service plan.

Need an Industrial RO System Inspection in Sabah?

If you are unsure whether your RO water is still meeting your operational requirement, SWFI can inspect the system and review its pretreatment, membrane condition and key operating indicators. We recommend solutions based on the actual water and system condition—not a one-size-fits-all approach.

From incoming water to bottled service

The bottling workflow is organised around the hotel’s supply and filling needs. The documented system arrangement includes incoming-water pre-filtration, advanced hybrid filtration, polishing and UV sterilisation before the water is filled into bottles.

Filter stages are selected to support the required application and the conditions of the incoming supply. Routine inspection, filter replacement and water-quality checks remain important parts of operating a bottled-water programme.

Why hotels install an in-house bottling plant

Treating and bottling water on site gives a hotel a direct role in its drinking-water service, from the treatment process to the bottle presented in a guest room. A well-managed plant can help create a more consistent guest experience while keeping supply planning closer to day-to-day hotel demand.

          • Hotel identity: branded glass bottles carry the property’s identity into rooms and other guest touchpoints.
          • On-site supply: the hotel can organise production and replenishment around its own occupancy and service routine.
          • Operational control: staff can follow a defined treatment, filling and sanitation workflow with a planned maintenance schedule.
          • Packaging choices: reusable or returnable glass bottles can reduce dependence on single-use packaging when supported by suitable washing, handling and food-safety procedures.

Designed for the operation: bottling capacity, treatment stages, bottle format, hygiene controls and staffing should be matched to actual water demand and the hotel’s food-safety requirements. The right operating plan matters as much as the equipment.

          JAKIM Halal-certified filtration media

The project uses selected filtration media carrying JAKIM Halal certification. SWFI holds the relevant JAKIM Halal certificate for the certified product or material. This supports halal-conscious hotel operations; the certification applies to its stated scope and should not be read as a blanket certification of the entire bottling plant, bottled water or hotel facility.

          Malaysia Halal certification mark

          Halal-certified filtration media

Certification is tied to the applicable certified product or material. Bottling hygiene, water testing and operational compliance must also be maintained for the hotel’s own process.

          Ongoing operation and quality assurance

An in-house plant is an operating process, not just an installation. Hotels should maintain a documented schedule for filter changes, UV checks, bottle washing and sanitation, staff handling, record-keeping and periodic water-quality testing. The suitable testing and compliance programme depends on the intended product and applicable Malaysian requirements.

SWFI can support hotels with filtration-system servicing and technical reviews to help keep treatment equipment in suitable operating condition.

Planning a Hotel Drinking Water Plant?

SWFI can review your incoming-water source, daily demand, bottle format, available space and operating requirements before recommending a suitable filtration and bottling configuration in Sabah.

Genting Plantations · Palm Oil Estates & Factories · Sabah, Malaysia
Example pre-filter and drinking-water dispenser installation for Genting Plantations in Sabah

Sabah Water Filter Industries (SWFI) provides drinking-water system solutions for Genting Plantations’ palm oil estates and factories. Project coverage includes Sapinango, Telupi, Kinabatangan and Pitas on Pulau Jambongan. Solutions can include pre-filtration and drinking-water dispensers, with treatment designed around each site’s water source, daily demand and operating conditions. The photographs shown here are a reference from Genting Tanjung Estate and Oil Mill. Providing treated drinking water on site is also intended to reduce reliance on bottled water brought in from outside.

When a plantation depends on surface water

Where a site draws raw water from a river or other surface source, water quality can vary with rainfall, runoff, season and intake conditions. Turbidity, suspended material, colour, organic matter and microbiological risks need to be assessed before selecting treatment stages. A pre-filter can be one part of a treatment train, but it should not be assumed to make untreated surface water safe to drink on its own.

That is why SWFI designs to the actual source and end use. Drinking water for staff facilities has different requirements from process or boiler water used by a mill; the right treatment stages and verification plan depend on each application.

          Genting Tanjung project reference

The photographs in this case study show the Genting Tanjung Estate and Oil Mill setting, existing water-treatment equipment, the supplied pre-filter and a drinking-water dispenser. They are a site reference for SWFI’s broader drinking-water system projects at Genting Plantations locations including Sapinango, Telupi, Kinabatangan and Pitas on Pulau Jambongan. The dispenser provides a convenient point of use, while upstream treatment must be selected and maintained to suit the incoming water and the required drinking-water quality.

A treatment design made for each estate

For plantations, staff housing and mill facilities in Tawau, Sandakan, Telupid and throughout Sabah, SWFI can assess the raw-water source, daily demand, distribution arrangement, site access and operating capacity before proposing a system. Depending on test results, a project may require additional steps such as intake screening, settling or clarification, media filtration, activated carbon, membrane treatment and final disinfection. These are design options—not a claim that every stage is installed at Genting Tanjung.

Design around the water: begin with a representative raw-water sample and the intended use. Then select the treatment train, storage, disinfection, monitoring and maintenance plan. Verify the treated water against applicable Malaysian drinking-water requirements before describing it as safe to drink.

Visual comparison of turbid raw water and clearer filtered water
Before-and-after appearance comparison supplied for the project.

The comparison illustrates a visible change in water appearance after filtration. Clear appearance alone does not confirm microbiological or chemical safety, so suitable water testing remains essential before drinking-water use.

Plantation operators also benefit from clear service schedules, routine inspections and practical operator guidance to keep equipment working as intended, especially where sites are remote.

          Supporting a greener, lower-plastic workplace

This project is also intended to support environmental sustainability across Genting Plantations’ mills and estates. Treating water on site and making it available through refillable dispensers can reduce dependence on purchasing bottled drinking water from outside. That can help cut single-use plastic bottle purchases and the plastic waste generated in factory and estate facilities, while supporting a cleaner, greener working environment.

Reliable source protection, suitable treatment, routine checks and filter maintenance remain important parts of responsible water management. The system supports this environmental goal alongside the practical need to provide drinking water at the site.

Addressing cloudy water and unpleasant odour

Residents had reported water reaching the estate housing that was still turbid and carried a strong, unpleasant smell. These symptoms can have different causes. A sand filter is used to reduce suspended particles and help improve clarity when correctly selected, operated and maintained, but odour may also come from dissolved substances or biological activity that ordinary sand filtration does not remove.

For that reason, filter media replacement is one part of a broader service response. The source water, filter operation, backwash performance and treated-water quality all need to be considered when deciding whether additional treatment is required.

Sand filter servicing at the plant

The service work focused on the existing horizontal deep-bed filter and renewal of its sand media. The supplied site photos and videos document the filter equipment, controls, media handling and service activity. After a media change, appropriate flushing, backwashing and operating checks help prepare the filter for return to service.

Equipment nameplate reference: the photographed filter plate identifies model MD8000. Its stated ratings include an 8.0 m² filtration area, maximum flow of 4,800 L/min, maximum working pressure of 400 kPa and sand-media weight of 14,300 kg. These are nameplate ratings; actual operating conditions and performance depend on the installed system and site conditions.

          Water quality for estate housing

The goal is to help deliver water to estate housing that is clearer and free from the reported unpleasant odour, while supporting water quality suitable for its intended use. Confirmation requires testing at the relevant points in the system after servicing. If turbidity or odour remains, the source and treatment train should be investigated for the cause; additional processes such as activated carbon or oxidation may be considered when water analysis supports them.

Where water is intended for drinking, appearance and odour alone cannot establish that it is safe. Microbiological and chemical testing against applicable Malaysian drinking-water requirements is needed before making a potable-water claim.

Disc Filter Technology for Industrial Water Systems

Need dependable particle filtration for irrigation or industrial water? A disc filter uses closely stacked, grooved discs to capture suspended solids through a depth-style filtration path. SWFI can help assess manual units and automatic self-cleaning disc filter systems against your source water, required flow and operating conditions.

Example of an automatic disc filter bank with multiple filter housings, valves and manifolds
Example of a multi-unit automatic disc filtration installation. Final arrangement depends on the application and selected equipment.
          How it works

From particle capture to automatic backwash

The filter stacks grooved polymer discs under compression. Water passes through the fine channels between the discs, where suspended particles are retained. In automatic systems, a rise in differential pressure can initiate a cleaning cycle. Valves change the flow path and backwash water carries the released solids to drain.

          1

          Water enters

Raw or process water enters the filter manifold and is directed to the disc elements.

          2

          Discs capture solids

Intersecting grooves between compressed discs trap suspended particles through a depth-style path.

          3

          Pressure is monitored

As retained solids build up, pressure difference across the filter rises. A control setting can trigger cleaning.

          4

          Backwash sends dirt to drain

The automatic valve sequence reverses flow through the element; released solids are flushed out. Manual units are opened and cleaned as required.

A multi-unit arrangement may maintain filtered-water delivery while one unit cleans when designed for sequential operation; confirm the selected model's control sequence and backwash requirements.

          Purpose & applications

          Where disc filtration can help

Disc filtration is a particle-removal stage used to protect downstream equipment and improve the reliability of water systems. It is selected by matching the contaminant type, filtration grade, flow, pressure and maintenance plan—not by pipe size alone.

          Typical uses

          • Pre-filtration for drip and micro-irrigation lines to help reduce emitter and nozzle blockage
          • Protection for pumps, valves, spray nozzles and process equipment from suspended solids
          • Industrial utility, cooling-water or recirculation loops where particle filtration is required
          • As one stage in a surface-water or raw-water treatment train, after suitable intake screening or settling when needed

          Industries and users

          • Palm oil estates, plantation operations and agricultural irrigation
          • Commercial farms, nurseries and landscape irrigation
          • Factories and industrial facilities seeking equipment-protection filtration
          • System integrators and maintenance teams managing high-flow or remote filtration points

Disc filters remove suspended particles within their rated range. They do not by themselves remove dissolved salts, pesticides, metals or microorganisms, and do not make water potable. Drinking-water applications need a complete treatment design and verification against applicable requirements.

          Selection guide

          Benefits and design considerations

          Potential advantages

          • Grooved discs provide a three-dimensional filtration path compared with a single screen surface.
          • Disc elements can retain mixed suspended particles and some organic material, depending on water quality and disc grade.
          • Automatic backwash can reduce routine manual cleaning and help maintain operation when system pressure, controls and drainage are correctly designed.
          • Parallel filter banks offer a modular way to serve higher flow requirements.
          • Disc units are compact relative to many media-filter installations at similar duties.

          Limitations to plan for

          • Automatic cleaning needs adequate backwash pressure and flow, a reliable control sequence and a suitable drain route.
          • Fine sand can lodge between discs during cleaning; a sand separator or media pre-filter may be needed where sand loading is significant.
          • Heavy silt, algae, fibrous debris or variable river water may need screening, settling or another pre-treatment stage before the disc filter.
          • Disc packs and seals still need periodic inspection; the interval depends on source water and operating conditions.
          • Backwash uses water and can temporarily reduce available flow in single-unit arrangements.

          Search intent & buyer questions

Questions operators ask before choosing a disc filter

The page is organized around the practical questions buyers search for: what the technology removes, how to choose a model, what it takes to clean, and whether it suits their water source.

What is a disc filter, and how does grooved-disc filtration work?
Disc filter vs screen filter or sand-media filter: which suits my water?
What micron rating and flow capacity should I choose for irrigation or a factory?
How does an automatic disc-filter backwash cycle work?
Can a disc filter handle river water, silt, algae or sand?
What pressure, backwash water, maintenance and drainage does it need?
Will a disc filter stop my drip lines or spray nozzles from clogging?

It can capture suspended particles that contribute to blockage when the disc grade is matched to the irrigation equipment and source water. Correct sizing, flushing practices and water-quality checks are still important.

Can I use a disc filter directly with river or pond water?

Possibly, but surface water can contain sand, silt, algae and changing organic loads. A coarse intake screen, settling or media filtration may be needed upstream. Assess the water before deciding on the treatment train.

Does a disc filter make water safe to drink?

No. Disc filtration is intended to remove suspended particles within the selected rating. It does not disinfect water or remove dissolved contaminants. Drinking water needs the appropriate treatment stages and water-quality verification.

Should I choose a manual or automatic disc filter?

Manual units can suit smaller or readily accessible systems with an available cleaning routine. Automatic units are useful when flow, labour, access or operating continuity justify automatic backwash, provided the site can supply the required pressure and discharge.

What information is needed to size a disc filter?

Share the water source and analysis, peak and normal flow, required filtration grade, available inlet pressure, pipe size, operating schedule, backwash-water source and drain location. SWFI can use these details to review a suitable product family.

Need help choosing a disc filter for your site?

Send SWFI your water source, flow requirement, pressure and application. We can review whether a manual unit, automatic disc filter or a multi-stage filtration arrangement is the right place to start.

          Swimming Pool Service

Swimming Pool Filter Media Replacement Service in Sabah

Professional inspection and customised filter media replacement to help keep your pool water clearer, circulation steadier and filtration system performing reliably.

          Better Filtration Performance

Healthy filter media supports clearer pool water

Filter media captures dirt, oils, leaves, debris and fine particles before water returns to your pool. Over time, the media can become compacted, clogged or channelled, reducing its ability to filter effectively.

This may result in dull water, rising filter pressure, weak circulation and increased chemical demand. Sabah Water Filter Industries provides professional inspection, servicing and filter media replacement for commercial and residential swimming pools throughout Sabah.

          Who is this service for?

          • Hotels, resorts and homestays
          • Condominiums and apartment facilities
          • Clubs, fitness centres and schools
          • Commercial pools and water features
          • Private residential swimming pools

          Signs your filter needs inspection

          • Cloudy or dull pool water
          • Filter pressure rises quickly after backwashing
          • Weak or uneven return-water flow
          • More frequent chemical adjustment is needed
          • Media has been used for many years or is visibly reduced

          The SWFI Process

Inspect first, replace only where needed

We do not replace filter media without first assessing the system. An initial inspection helps identify whether the problem is related to the media, valve, pump, pressure condition or internal filter components.

          1. Inspect the filter vessel, pressure, pump flow, valves and water circulation.
          2. Assess the existing media for compaction, channeling or contamination.
          3. Safely remove old media and inspect laterals and internal components.
          4. Install suitable media in the correct layers and grades for your pool system.
          5. Perform backwash, rinse and functional testing before handover.

          The Right Media Choice

Media selected for your system condition

We can recommend silica sand, glass media or zeolite based on your filter type, water condition, pool usage and operating requirements. Every system is assessed individually so the recommendation is practical, suitable and cost-effective.

There is no single replacement interval for every pool. Water quality, pool usage, backwash practice and the existing media type should all be considered before a decision is made.

          Frequently Asked Questions

Important information before replacing filter media

How often should pool filter media be replaced?

No single timeframe suits every pool. Usage, water quality, media type and backwashing practice determine when replacement is appropriate. An on-site inspection provides the most accurate recommendation.

Can filter media be cleaned instead of replaced?

Some media may still be serviceable when it remains in good condition. However, severely compacted, contaminated or degraded media will usually need replacement to restore effective filtration.

Does SWFI service commercial pool systems?

Yes. We support commercial and residential pool systems, including hotels, resorts, condominiums, clubs and private properties.
